10:27 pm - Top-tier
llooking_for_me Do you really get a better education at top-tier (I mean top-tier small liberal arts colleges, too) schools?

I understand that people with the highest grades go there, but do you really get more information or more thorough explanations?

"A survey by the Wharton School found that in 2001, 10 percent of CEOs received undergraduate degrees at one of the eight Ivies; 48 percent earned them from public colleges and universities."

Not that it really matters, but the stat seems somewhat misleading. Could it be that fewer CEOs went to Ivy League schools as undergrad in part just because there are fewer people who went to Ivy League schools?

My guess is that fewer than 10% of collge students are in the Ivy League (someone correct me if I'm wrong here), so it seems that if you went to an Ivy League school, you're actually more likely to end up as a CEO.

If there's anyone who can shine some more light on this subject, please do so.

-Ben

8:33 pm - Community college transfer
llooking_for_me I will be going to a community college and would like to be accepted into an Ivy League school afterwards. I'm debating whether to continue on to Spanish 4 at the community college or start French and possibly go up to French 3 (or maybe even up to French 5) or something. Would it be more impressive if I went up really high on Spanish and not take French or stop Spanish after Spanish 3 and begin French?

What do Ivy League colleges look for in community college students? What classes would they want you to take?

(While this is technically an admissions-related question, it's not one of those masochistic, College Confidential-esque posts complete with SAT scores and detailed explanations of my EC's, but if it's not permitted, please delete it. I'm just looking for some advice right now.)

I don't know how many of you have dealt with this, but I was recently deferred from Columbia University. I suppose it's better than being flat-out rejected, but my ego is a little bruised right now, and I still irrationally love Columbia and would kill to go there regardless of their figurative bitch-slap.

So, if you were deferred from your first choice school and were accepted through RD, what did you do in the four months of hell that made the admissions office change their mind? I have no idea where to go from here. Thanks for your help.

Since no one has posted for a while, what do you all think of the early admissions program that Harvard and Princeton recently eliminated? Was this a good idea?

10:05 am - Help a grad student with her research?
digiculture Hello, Ivy Leaguers! My name is Kris, and I am a graduate student at Northwestern, currently researching student digital culture. I am running a research project now that surveys college students about their use of social networking software - Facebook, MySpace, Livejournal, etc, - and am looking for students to participate. Who better to ask than the original Facebook members - ivy league students!

Do you have 10 minutes and a keen desire to have your (anonymous) opinion count? Or, do you have 10 minutes and a little sympathy for a broke and tired grad. student? The survey can be found here and I would really appreciate it if you would click through and complete it.

Thank you so much for your time!

2:39 pm - maybe this will help u

alsettimo_cielo
hey i'm new to this community. I'm born and raised in nYc, the best place on earth (represent!)
anyway, i've visited columbia university a few times (just walking by and because my cousin went there) but it was difficult to really get a feel for the campus and campus life, which felt invisible and hard to grasp, because, you know, it's in the city and everything and people go and come their own way all the time. I heard from a friend about the U, it has a whole set of ivy league dvds that the students at columbia made (and they have one for the other ivy league schools, as well, i think). So i just wanted to give u guys the site to see for urselves, and recommend the dvds to get a more detailed and honest behind the scenes idea of the schools, if you are applying. Oh, and if you go there, they have a blog section where you can write about different things about your school, some are pretty interesting. Hope this helped.

6:30 pm - Agree or disagree?

vizilla
The job market was a lot worse in 2003 and this was one of the things a friend wrote to me regarding an Ivy League degree:

benny.... villamonster... hombre del pajeta manila...
just because it's an old listing doesn't mean you can't waltz in there with your resume, place it down on a desk, and say, "i rule. give me a job."
that's what your degree is all about. it's a paper replica of balls.

Anyone have any opinions on the Ivy League degree as a paper replica of balls?

Just trying to get some conversations going in this mostly dead community...

vizilla
So, which of you high school seniors hit the jackpot? Who's going where?

And for you college seniors, have you guys figured out what you'll be doing with your big, fancy Ivy League proofs of purchase/degrees? Are any of you guys done with recruiting or grad school admissions yet?

1:04 am - Looking for advice from those who know!

archesophos
Hello.

I have dreams of Yale, but I'm not fooling myself. I really have no chance. I am very unhappy with this, but of course being unhappy with a situation doesn't magically change it for the better. :(

So, I am wondering if any of you might have suggestions for non-Ivy schools that have Ivy-quality programs in philosophy.

Thank you.

10:43 pm - The Campus Manual
weezychico I'm sorry to bug you all with this kind of shameless plug, but I thought it might be interesting for college students in the area...

So my friend and I came up with an idea the other day. This is a website for mainly college aged students that has a wikipedia like format but provides more than just basic information for the university. Every school has its own culture, vernacular, buildings, food, and the like.

We are both Brandeis University students so we began to write entries for our school (which makes up the bulk of the site thus far). The entries began as a rather objective thing but grew more humorous as time progressed. The articles are often comedic but largely factually true (or honest in student opinion). Anyone can edit these pages, so if somethings objectionable it can be changed. Check it out at http://www.campusmanual.com/ , and feel free to start entries for your own schools, or message me at scrimers86 . It'd be a really good and humorous database for college students, in our opinion.

oh my GOD!

I don't know whether or not you guys have seen this yet, but in my caffeine-induced stupor I found this AMAZING and just have to share with all of you.

this goes out to my butler hoes -

http://www.prangstgrup.com/index_1000.html

(the first two are absolutely hilarious - start-up sound and lecture musical. both filmed in the bigger butler reading rooms ahhahahahah... GENIUS. ok maybe it's just my all-nighter delerium right now but i think it's genius anyway... cross-posted to relevant communities, hope you guys don't mind.)

[er... ps other ivy leaguers... this was filmed in butler library, at columbia. if it's too irrelevant then feel free to delete this]

[edit 2: oops, i was actually referring to another video in the archive, "library musical," not lecture musical. all funny still :P mostly filmed around/on columbia campus.]
